Beginning
Four-Harness Weaving
The
beginning student will learn basic weaving theory and
techniques. No previous weaving experience is necessary.
Topics covered will include designing and planning a
project, winding a warp, threading the loom, pattern
drawdowns, and fulling. During the lessons the student
will begin by weaving a twill sampler and go onto a
project of their choosing. Four-harness table looms
are provided. There is a materials fee of $20 for the
learning notebook and sampler yarns. The cost for materials
for individual project is additional, based on the yarns
chosen. |
Independent
Weaving
Learn
new techniques, do a group study project or work on
your own project. You will have access to expert guidance,
design assistance, and an extensive reference library
of weaving books, magazines, and weaving samples. Four
and Eight harness table and floor looms are provided
depending on the project. |

Rigid
Heddle Weaving
Rigid heddle looms produce plain weave cloth on
a fun and portable loom. Students will begin by
learning how to design a scarf, or set of placemats,
or table runner. Lessons will focus on winding
the warp, threading the loom, and begin weaving.
More advanced students can study how to create
lace and surface textures on the rigid heddle
loom. Loom can be provided or you may use your
own loom. |

Weaving
for Kids
Children, ages 8 and older (third
grade) may take weaving lessons anytime during
open studio hours or on another mutually agreed
on day and time. Extended hours are available
during school vacation weeks. No previous weaving
experience is necessary. The students will wind
the warp, thread a four-harness table loom,
and weave a project of their choice. Possible
projects are a scarf, pillow, placemats, doll
blanket, and/or a belt. Looms will be provided.
The cost is $8.50 per hour (2 hour minimum)
plus materials (the cost of materials will depend
on the project design; an average cotton scarf
is $10.50). A minimum of 16 hours are needed
to complete a scarf in the studio (fewer hours
are needed if the child takes the loom home
and does homework). |

"Don't
Bogart* That
Loom!"
New Floor
Loom Policy
A
Place to Weave welcomes and encourages weaving students
to try different types of projects and a variety of
loom configurations. Due to the popularity and limited
number of floor looms, and to be fair to all students,
the expectation is that weavers will make a concerted
effort to complete their project(s) in a timely manner.
Effective September 1, 2011, all weavers using a floor
loom will be required to sign an agreement prior to
the start of the project. The agreement will make
these principles clear so everyone knows the expectations:
 |
There
is a presumption of good faith effort on the
part of all parties; |
 |
Weavers
will commit to working on the project for a
minimum of 2 hours per week; |
 |
A
Place to Weave agrees to provide support, as
required, to help ensure successful completion; |
| |
Before starting a project, the estimated amount
of time to be using the loom will be agreed
(for planning & scheduling purposes); |
|
Weavers
will agree to pay $30.00 per week for loom rental
after a grace period of two (2) weeks beyond
the original estimated time to complete the
project, if they do not appear to be making
a good faith effort to complete and if others
are waiting for the loom. |
|
If
the weaver abandons the project and if no agreement
can be reached about a new project completion
date, A Place to Weave may remove the project
from the loom so that the next weaver may use
it. |
|
Weavers
shall be responsible for all project materials/supplies
regardless of completion date; |
| |
A
“Project Card” will be affixed to each loom,
identifying the weaver, the type of project,
start date and projected end date. |
We
hope that this new policy will make your project planning
easier and more predictable and we look forward to
admiring your next weaving creation!
